Don't Try to Trap a Virginia Skunk Without These Important Equipment!

The Chesapeake skunks do not have the aggressive behavior of other wildlife creatures. They will mostly remain active at night which implies that you will rarely encounter them. Generally, the skunk will not activate its defense mechanism unless they have been cornered and coerced. They will also warn you several times before they will fire their spray. Nonetheless, you still need to get them out of your property to avoid the possibility of getting sprayed by the skunk.

Equipments Needed to Trap the Skunk

Trapping would be the best method when removing the Virginia skunk out of our property. It comes with very minimal risks that you can avoid if you prepare all the necessary equipments in advance. Here are some of them.

The Right Trap

The standard cage trap may not be suitable for trapping a Chesapeake skunk. This is due to the fact that they might release their spray if you approach the trap. If you are getting an enclosed and a skunk-proof cage, you will have to check it often especially during the summer. They can die from extreme heat. If you are using an enclosed cage, there will be no way to check if the animal inside is the skunk that is infesting your property. For all you know, it might be the loving cat of your neighbor. This is why you have to monitor the trap. Other skunk-proof trap comes with holes where you can identify the animal inside.

Lures and Baits

The effectiveness of your trap will be determined by the placement and the Virginia bait that you are going to use. There are commercially available lures and baits that are specifically designed to encourage the creature to enter the trap. There are pastes that are manufactured from plant-based ingredients that will capture the attention of the skunk.

Release Pole

This might be handy if the Virginia skunk refuses to come out of the trap after you captured them. Release poles are made from heavy-duty plastic pipes that will not easily break from the strength of the skunk. The length is also ideal in protecting yourself against their spray. Be sure that you have an experience in operating the release pole since you might injure the skunk if you don' t know how to restrict their movement using this equipment. If you don' t have the skills to use this, it is best to let the professional handle it. You should also look for the new type of release pole that will not suffocate the animal.

Preparing the necessary equipment will make it easier to capture the Chesapeake skunk. For those who are opting for the standard type of cage trap, you may need a blanket to cover the cage trap. Approach the creature slowly since you don' t want to startle it. You should also wear protective gears to minimize the possibility of disease transmission. When transporting the trap, secure it so it won' t tip over. Open the door in the opposite direction and allow the skunk to leave the trap voluntarily.
