Chesapeake Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month: How to Tell 100% If Your Virginia Opossum Intruders Have Babies

Opossums are adaptable Chesapeake creatures that are found in different habitats. In the urban jungle, they tend to live close to the humans to have an immediate access to water and food. You will find them in the obscure and less-frequented areas of your house such as under your porch or shed. While they are known to be submissive, they can still be protective especially if they have little opossums.

How to Determine if the Opossums Have Babies

In order to stay safe from their attack, you will have to determine if they are carrying Virginia babies before attempting to get rid of them. This will also ensure that the babies will not die from starvation if you separate them from their mother.

Understand the Physiology of the Opossums

Opossums are known as marsupials which mean they have unique reproductive features that you will not see on the other Chesapeake creatures. The reproductive system of the marsupials is divided into two. They also have a pouch where they will carry their young until such time that they can survive on their own. Once you noticed these pouch, this means that the opossums are nursing her little joeys.

Season

Depending upon the location, the breeding season of the Virginia opossum will start in January and may last up to October. The fertility cycle of most female opossums will last at an average of 38 days. The cycle will continue as long as pregnancy is not occurring. In case you found an opossum under your porch during this season, then there is a possibility that you are dealing with an opossum that is carrying her babies.

Gestation

If you have a pregnant opossum in your property, it won' t take too long until they give birth to the young opossums. Their gestation period will only last for 2 weeks at most. This is due to the fact that joeys will develop out of their womb. They may have as little as 10 baby opossums or as large as 20 young ones.

The little Virginia opossums will continue to live in the pouch of the mother opossums for two months. During this time, they will be completely dependent to the mother opossum to survive. Once their senses start to develop, they will then start to separate themselves from the mother opossum. This is the perfect time for you to evict them out of your property. You will notice that the opossums are large enough when they are no longer inside the pouch of their mother. They will spend more time at the back of the mother opossum.

Opossums are generally harmless Chesapeake creatures but you still need to stay alert on the sign of their activities since they can still cause property damages. If you are not confident that you can capture them without any problems, do not hesitate to call the help of your opossum control experts. They can provide you with tips and consultations that will help you stay away from all types of infestation.
